Summer Essentials for Women Over 40
Summer is finally upon us! It can be so easy to get caught up in what’s trending on social media and stocking our carts with fashion fads. Your spring-to-summer wardrobe can easily get lost in translation. As you mature, you have an idea of your style and what you’re comfortable in. It’s high time to start developing a chic, not to mention functional personal wardrobe. Start with these versatile pieces that are essential to a stylish woman over 40
Floral-print dresses are usually the IT dress of the summer. They are appropriate for just about any occasion. If you’re not a florals girl, that’s okay, go for another versatile print like polka dots or stripes. For a casual look pair with your favorite sandals. For more professional attire, pair with kitty heels and a structured bag.
Just because it’s summer, doesn’t mean there’s no breeze about. Turn to a light sweater or blazer to accompany any outfit. It’s a good idea to choose a relaxed fit in neutral colors like white, tan, and navy and a light fabric like linen, cotton, chambray, or rayon. Light fabrics are perfect for work and won’t get too hot while you’re out and about.
There’s something about big shades that adds sophistication to any look. Stock up on a few for the season.
Statement jewelry is an excellent way to add flair and instantly take a day look to a night look. I always suggest choosing jewelry that shows off your unique personality and style. Whether that is big hoop earrings, vintage rings, or bright colored bracelets, opt for bold jewelry that has character.
The Perfect White Shirt
This doesn’t mean any old shirt. For summer, pick a good quality, lightweight, loose shirt. Try short and long basic tees as well as dress shirts. This makes them easy to tuck into jeans, skirts, or shorts and dress them up or down with accessories.
Straw bags are still around and I’m in love! No matter if it’s round, cross-body, cage-like, or a tote, these straw bags make you look summer ready ALL THE TIME!
Cropped pants or capris are pants that stop above the ankle and a little below the knee and are a lovely alternative to shorts. Go for the straight cut or flare option. They are most flattering with a short dress, short shirt, or a tucked-in top. To lengthen the appearance of your legs, wear high heels or booties that are the same color as your pants.
The Ideal Swimsuit
This one’s on you! You should always choose swimwear that you’re comfortable and confident in. For some this may be a bikini, others may go for a one piece, or hey why not do both? Swimsuits definitely don’t have an age limit. Ditch any that make you feel frumpy or uncomfortable.
Play up your assets and mask those you’re not fond of. A high-waisted bottom hides love handles and makes you seem taller and leaner. A full-piece that has ruching or a peplum hides a tummy. Invest in a couple that are figure-flattering and make you feel like a boss babe.
The midi skirt can keep you a lot cooler than a long one, without exposing too much leg. Elect a relaxed, flowy, ruffled, or wrap skirt. Tuck a basic t-shirt into it for something casual or a fresh white shirt for an effortless work outfit.
Comfortable strappy sandals with cushioned footbeds and well-made soles are both stylish and practical. Start with neutral sandals that can go with anything in your wardrobe. Then, branch out to fun sandals with different colors or prints.
Remember to look for classic pieces that are good quality and are comfy. No matter your age, you’ll fly through the warmer months looking stunning and feeling confident. Investing in staple clothing pieces can be the key to creating outfits you love. The perfect pieces can really form the backbone of your closet for many years to come.
